10 Reasons to Attend the RGV Birding Festival

By Marci Madsen Fuller, Chair RGVBF
Welcome Birders!

Welcome Birders!

1) Rediscovery of the Passenger Pigeon in the lower RGV.

Okay, just dreaming.  But how about 30 unique sub-tropical species—Green Jay, Chachalaca, Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Great Kiskadee, etc.?

2) World-class speakers like Roger Tory Peterson and Jacques Cousteau.

Sigh…wouldn’t that be nice?  But we DO have dynamic birding-world speakers, like Don Kroodsma and Jeff Gordon and more.

3) Famous places field trips—Serengeti, Galapagos, Great Barrier Reef.

Well, maybe those are a BIT far afield.  But how about the fabled King Ranch?  Extremely big-list birdy Santa Ana and Laguna Atascosa NWR’s? Hotspot South Padre Island?

4) 365 days of perfect sun.

Yeah, so not quite that many.  But Harlingen IS sub-tropical, boasting nice winter weather, palm trees, hibiscus, and all those thaw-your-northern-blood perks.

5) Free hotel rooms and restaurants meals.

Okay, exaggerating again here.  But Harlingen and the Valley IS a very affordable U.S. destination.

Enough of the silliness.  5 MORE reasons to attend:

6)  Have fun at receptions and socials.

7)  Attend great eBird and birdsong workshops.

8)  Support the Festival efforts in local and youth awareness.

9)  Shop the Birder’s Bazaar.

10) Be part of our Festival Camaraderie.

I’ve got another good reason. Because if you don’t come you are going to feel so left out and feeling really sad when it’s over and everyone else is talking about how wonderful it was to see all those lifers and exciting birds.
Tell me, is this not a good reason to go ahead and sign up. I don’t like seeing people sad. So hurry and get your registration in.
